Assignment: Diseases of the Respiratory System Jigsaw
Diseases of the Respiratory System Jigsaw Assignment
This next assignment is an experiment. In the past I have had groups take a single topic and present it to the class; this time I want to do things differently.
For this assignment, you will have four classes to organize and present the information about a series of respiratory diseases. You will need to find a group with no more than 3 people. Each group will be responsible for answering the following questions about the following topics.
Topics:
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
- Asthma
- Cystic Fibrosis
- Tuberculosis
- Pneumothorax and Hemothorax
*All groups are responsible for all 5 topics, even groups with less than 3 people*
Your assignment should answer at the following list of questions: (feel free to include any other information you deem relevant)
- Using proper anatomical terminology, describe what the disorder is.
- Explain how the disorder develops.
- Describe the triggers for the disease. Is it sudden(acute)? Chronic?
- What signs and symptoms does the disease show?
- What is the immediate treatment for somebody showing those symptoms? For example, if you saw your co-worker with those symptoms?
- What is the medical treatment for this disease? Include both short term treatments and long term treatments.
- What kind of preventative steps can someone who might be susceptible to this sort of disease (genetically, for example) take to keep themselves healthy?
- What references did you use to find all of this out?
Mark Rubric:
This assignment will be marked in 2 parts. Part one is the standard presentation rubric and it will be applied to the whole group’s presentation.
The second is a teamwork rubric that will be applied to your personal effort. (you will fill out a survey but Mr.Way will assign your mark)

Question Box Friday: Meat Causes Cancer
Today's question box question come from I_LOVE_CHOCOLATE! who asked "DOES CHOCOLATE PREVENT CANCER?"
Well, you don't have to yell my friend, but here is a related topic that followed the WHO announcing that red meat is a carcinogen(cancer causing agent)l.
