Specific Procedures and Basline Testing

Today we will discuss the need for specific procedures and how to do a baseline test.

The baseline test is an effort to avoid the placebo effect:

Procedure: Taking a baseline heart-rate test:

1. Have test subject sit down and wait quietly and relaxed for 3 minutes.
2. Find subject's radial pulse.
3. Begin timer for 15 seconds and count heart rate during those 15 seconds.
4. Record 15 second pulse rate on data table.
5. If subject's resting heart rate is above 95 beats per minute(BPM) allow them to rest for an additional 3 minutes and repeat steps 2 to 4.
6. If subject's heart rate continues to be elevated, find new test subject.

Research Proposal

For today you are going to start working on your research proposal. It should include the following:

• Research Question
• What are you planning on studying?
• Hypothesis
• What do you think will happen and why?

At this point, please send an email to MDWAY@EDUCBE.CA letting me know that you have done the initial part and who's assignment folder it is in(or a link).

I will give feedback on your lab so that you can make it as effective as possible.

The rest of the research proposal requires:

• Procedure
• Be specific with each step. Someone who isn't in your group should be able to run the lab without you.
• Variables
• Define what your Manipulated, Responding, and Controlled variables are.
• Observation Tables
• Create specific tables (with units) that would be easy to fill out when your test day comes around.
• Lab Schedule
• What days will you be testing on? What days will you be test subjects?
